ANZAC Day 1956

The men of El Arish in these portraits are a mix of World War 1 & World War 2 veterans. Their dignity and price are obvious and this is confirmed by the close presence of the Australian flag.

  • Noel Hooper Senior - Returned soldier World War 2 and employee of Hull Timber Syndicate
  • Douglas Wilson - Returned soldier World War 2 RAF and farmer on the Bruce Highway
  • Ted Pike - Returned soldier World War 2 and storekeeper in Ryrie Street
  • Percy Benn - Soldier AIF (Gunner) in World War 1 and farmer on Granadilla Road
  • Herb Jones - Returned soldier World War 1 Light Horse at Gallipoli and farmer on Jones Road
  • Colin Burke - Returned soldier World War 2 RAF and Principal at El Arish State School
  • Jock Graham - Returned soldier World War 1 and farmer on Jaffa Road
  • George Watt - Returned soldier World War 1 and farmer on Jones Road

Middle Row from the left:

  • Amos Thornhill - Soldier of World War 1 at Gallipoli and farmer on Thornhill Road. His original Settlers Cottage or "Standard House" can be seen today and shows the renovations made by Amoz. It is now owned and lived in by the Bracewell family who originally built the house as building contractors
  • Jock Irving - Soldier of World War 1 and farmer on Hill 60 Road and then an agency selling the Irving Bicycle. Commission Agent in Chauvel Street located nearly opposite the original site of the Railway Station
  • Norm Reynolds - Soldier of World War 1 and farmer on Granadilla Road, El Arish and brother-in-law to Amos Thornhill
  • Reverend Jones - Anglican minister who went on to be a part of the building of the first Anglican Cathederal in Papua New Guinea
  • R.C. "Charlie" Jackson - Returned soldier World War 1 and farmer on Jackson Road
  • Wally (Watty) Coleman - Returned soldier World War1 and employee of Queensland Railway
  • Harry Plumb - Returned soldier World War 1 and farmer at Bingil Bay

Front Row from left:

  • Harry Linnett - Returned soldier World War 2 AIF and farmer on Granadilla Road. Harry then retired in Tully
  • Johnny Turnball - Returned soldier World War 2 AIF
  • Bill White - Returned soldier World War AIF
